Water Safety PSA Splashes onto Big Screen

Friday, April 27th, 2018

The second episode in the Pflugerville Fire Department’s new series of Public Service Announcements is making a splash on the big screen this summer. Now through July 12, the “Watch the Water” PSA will be shown before the movie previews for every show at Stone Hill Cinemark Theater in Pflugerville. The public safety reminder was filmed in partnership with the Hendrickson High School student film program and features several Pflugerville firefighters.

If you can’t make it to the movies this summer, you can still make your family safer by watching this short PSA together here on the Fire Department’s YouTube channel.  Special thanks also go to the YMCA of Austin. This PSA was filmed on location at the Northwest Family YMCA on McNeil Road.

Over the past five years, Pflugerville firefighters and paramedics have responded to 34 calls for water rescues or near drownings all across our community. In fact, drowning is the #1 cause of accidental childhood death in the U.S. – but it doesn’t have to be!  Many childhood drownings could be prevented if there was an adult designated as a water watcher. Cell phones, headphones, snoozing, socializing, drinking alcohol, and reading are common but potentially deadly sources of distraction.  Being a water watcher means not allowing yourself to become distracted.  Without a sharp focus on the water and great communication among the adults, a backyard pool can be just as risky as the beach or a community lake.  But as shown in this new PSA, adults can work together to take turns being the one officially in charge.  So stay focused this summer y’all and keep kids safer — Watch the Water!
