Division: Community Risk Reduction

Classification:  Regular, Full-time, Non-exempt

Summary:

The District is recruiting to fill one open Fire Inspector position.  The candidate will be hired as one of three possible Fire Inspector classifications based on his or her qualifications.  Each classification is generally described below. Out-of-state applicants without the desired Texas certifications are encouraged to apply as equivalency will be considered.  A Fire Inspector I is responsible for ensuring compliance with the District’s adopted fire code through a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the inspection of existing and new occupancies, the inspection of fire protection systems and assisting with other fire code enforcement activities. Work complexity is considered entry-level and is performed under moderate supervision and guidance. This position may also assist with community outreach, public education and other risk reduction activities as assigned.  A Fire Inspector II in addition may assist with plan review.  Work complexity requires a considerable amount of expertise and the ability to work with limited direction or guidance.  A Fire Inspector III in addition will lead significant projects or programs within the Community Risk Reduction Division.  Work complexity requires an extensive amount of expertise and the ability to work independently without direction or guidance on recurring activities.

 

Fire Inspector I:

Essential Functions:

Duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following (but not limited to):

  •  Schedule, coordinate and perform inspections of fire protection systems, buildings and properties to ensure compliance with the district’s fire code and related standards.
  • Schedule, coordinate and perform fire and life safety inspections of licensed facilities.
  • Prepare and maintain inspection reports.
  • Resolve compliance problems with various parties through written or verbal communication and maintain a record of said communication.
  • Participate in pre-development and/or pre-construction meetings with members of the design community.
  • Perform public education services as requested.
  • Prepare and participate in the presentation of training to various audiences.
  •  Attend training classes and conferences on a variety of fire code related topics.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

Licenses & Certification Required: 

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Fire Inspector Certificate required.  Equivalent certifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis for out-of-state applicants.
  • Maintain a Class “C” Texas vehicle driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

 

Fire Inspector II:

Additional Essential Functions:

  • Issue legal orders related to the enforcement of the fire code. 
  • Prepare and maintain documentation related to all activities.
  • Review basic Site, Tenant Finish Out and other less complex plans to determine compliance with applicable codes.

Required Education, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Four (4) years of direct experience in reviewing plans to verify compliance with a nationally recognized fire code and performing fire code compliance inspections, and
  • The ability to obtain and maintain International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I certification.

(An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of the District.)

Licenses & Certification Required: 

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Intermediate Fire Inspector certification; TCFP Plans Examiner (preferred).  Equivalent certifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis for out-of-state applicants.
  • Must obtain International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I Certificate within one year of start date.   
  • Maintain a Class “C” Texas vehicle driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

 

Fire Inspector III:

Additional Essential Functions:

Duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following (but not limited to):

  • Schedule, coordinate and participate in pre-development and/or pre-construction meetings with members of the design community.   
  • Review site, building and other fire safety related plans to determine compliance with applicable codes. 
  • Research available options, select the best option, prepare the required documentation and issue legal orders related to the enforcement of the fire code. 
  • Prepare and lead the presentation of training to various audiences. 
  • Research, select, coordinate and/or attend training classes and conferences on a variety of fire code related topics. 
  • Assist Inspector I and Inspector II personnel as needed. 
  • Lead and manage assigned projects using resources provided to meet expected goals and outcomes.

Required Education, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Eight (8) years of direct experience in reviewing plans to verify compliance with a nationally recognized fire code and performing fire code compliance inspections, 
  • The ability to obtain and maintain International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I and II certifications.
  • Associate’s Degree in public safety, fire protection, or related field.  Bachelor Degree preferred.

Licenses & Certification Required: 

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Advanced Fire Inspector Certificate and Plans Examiner; Master Fire Inspector Certificate preferred; Equivalent certifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis for out-of-state applicants.
  • Must obtain ICC Fire Inspector I and Fire Inspector II certification within two years of start date;
  • Maintain a Class “C” Texas vehicle driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position will be responsible for the oversight and management of significant projects or programs within the Community Risk Reduction Division as directed by the Division Director. This position may be required to act as the Division Manager in their absence.

Physical Demands:

This job operates in a clerical office setting and mostly in a field environment including new and existing building construction. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Applicant must possess:

  • Ability and physical stamina to perform moderate to strenuous physical activity necessary to climb, stoop, and access all areas of buildings or construction sites in order to conduct inspections. Exposure to slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to occasionally perform physically demanding tasks under varying weather conditions outdoors. Exposure to marked changes in temperature/humidity, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, odors, mists, or other potentially irritating particles.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to coordinate hand-eye and eye-foot movement.
  • Ability to maintain visual acuity up close, at a distance, peripherally, in depth, and discern the full color spectrum.
  • Ability to hear adequately when working in dangerous areas.
  • Ability to operate and complete tasks wearing required personal protective equipment.

Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position of a minimum 40-hour week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel:

Ability to commute between operational locations, within 30 miles or less, driving District assigned vehicles.

 

Compensation

This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications. (Starting hourly rate.)

Fire Inspector I: $24.19 – $33.33   DOQ/E
Fire Inspector II: $30.12 – $39.59   DOQ/E
Fire Inspector III: $33.71 – $45.50   DOQ/E
