Fire Prevention Month 2026

Fire Prevention Month is a great time to take a few simple steps
to make your home and family safer. This year’s national campaign
focuses on the safe use and charging of devices powered by
lithium-ion batteries.

Charge Into Fire Safety

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day,
including phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, e-bikes and scooters.
Safe charging habits can help prevent battery fires. Follow these simple
tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Unplug When Fully Charged
Once your device is fully charged, unplug it rather than leaving it
connected unnecessarily.

Charge on a Hard Surface
Charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk or bare
floor. Avoid beds, couches, pillows and other soft surfaces.

Use the Right Charger
Use the charging cord and equipment that came with your device
or equipment approved by the manufacturer.

Know the Warning Signs
Stop using a device or battery if it becomes unusually hot, swells,
leaks, smells strange, smokes or makes popping or hissing sounds.
