The Pflugerville Fire Department (Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2) is pleased to announce that the Pflugerville City Council has approved an Interlocal Agreement for the District to provide ambulance transport and Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency medical services within the City of Pflugerville beginning October 1, 2026.
The agreement represents another major milestone in a journey that began more than fifteen years ago. Since regional studies first identified the need to improve emergency medical services in the Pflugerville area in 2011, ESD No. 2 has steadily expanded its EMS capabilities by hiring paramedics, adding ambulances, investing in advanced medical equipment, and building the infrastructure necessary to provide a modern, fire-based EMS system.
“This is an exciting day for our community,” said Fire Chief Nick Perkins. “For more than 70 years, ESD No. 2 has proudly served the residents of Pflugerville. This agreement represents another important step toward providing an integrated emergency response system that delivers exceptional patient care, faster access to advanced medical services, and long-term reliability for our growing community.”
Under the agreement, the City will provide $1.9 million annually during the first two years of the six-year contract. Additionally, Travis County Commissioners Court approved a one-time $600,000 contribution for the first year of the transition. Together, these agreements make the transition to a locally governed, fire-based EMS system possible with minimal impact to the City’s first-year EMS expenditures while expanding ambulance resources and improving long-term service reliability.
As part of implementation, ESD No. 2 plans to:
For decades, Pflugerville firefighters have been the first medical professionals arriving at many emergencies throughout the community. Beginning October 1, ESD No. 2 will also provide ambulance transport within the City, creating a fully integrated fire-based EMS system under local governance.
The agreement was approved by the Pflugerville City Council on July 14 and will take effect October 1, 2026. Over the coming months, ESD No. 2 will focus on stations, preparing ambulances and equipment, training employees, and ensuring a seamless transition for the community.
Chief Perkins added, “This accomplishment belongs to many people. I want to thank the City Council, Travis County Commissioners Court, our Board of Commissioners, our employees, our labor partners, and the many community members who have supported the vision of building a stronger high quality EMS system. Most importantly, I want to thank our firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and support staff whose professionalism and commitment to excellence made this partnership possible. We are honored by the confidence placed in us and look forward to serving the residents of Pflugerville for many years to come.”
